Is it allowed to take Cannabis sativa during lactation?
Is it safe for a nursing mother and a child?

Delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is a liposoluble metabolite that accumulates in fat tissue and may reach a concentration in the human milk that would be as high as 8 times of plasma level. It has been shown to induce hypotonia, poor suction, sedation and psychomotor delay in one-year-old children who were exposed to cannabis through breastfeeding. THC has been detected in the infant's urine for three weeks after exposition. Mean head circumference may be lower than that of non-exposed infants. A higher risk for Sudden Unexpected Death of Infancy has been linked to homes of consumers. In spite of reduction of Prolactin level, no decrease in milk production has been observed. The deleterious effect on judgment and behavior seen in individuals who use Cannabis may interfere with ability of women for motherhood and will pose a higher risk for life-threatening and harm to health.
