Is it allowed to take Mesalamine during lactation?
Is it safe for a nursing mother and a child?

Mesalazine is badly absorbed by the intestine, serum levels are low with scant excretion into breast milk. N-acetyl-5-ASA is an inactive metabolite which is excreted into breast milk but not higher than 10% of relative infant's dose. No harm effects among breastfed infants from treated mothers have been reported, except for rare cases of diarrhea reported in the 80's with the use of Mesalazine compounds different to Balsalazide. In a review of 121 cases and 121 controls, the authors failed to observe those findings. (Moretti, 1989). Expert consensus supports the compatibility of Mesalazine during breastfeeding.

I was recently diagnosed with ulcerative colitis/ proctitis. I was first advised I may have had hemorrhoids and after a colonoscopy that was proven wrong. I have been on this medication for about 1 month and started to see results within the 1st week of use. I am very happy as I have struggled with bloody, mucus diarrhea stools for 5 years. Now I have a normal bm.

Colon healed 90% when using this medication for three years. One short flare up, easily resolved by increasing dose from maintenance to max, then tapering back to maintenance. Side effects only in the beginning such as headache, bloating, dizziness. After months of use, none.

Made my symptoms worse. I had severe cramping to the point where I couldn`t move. Previously (on no drugs) have had solid BM`s, on Mesalamine, there was only liquid BM`s.

Been diagnosed with UC since I was 18. Mesalamine never really worked when I used to flare up. Then I started using cannabis. Yep, weed proved to be a great anti-inflammatory. Literally no symptoms for the past 15 years. I urge anyone to try cannabis as an anti-inflammatory.
